Class Description
- This is an introductory studio course using digital cameras and image manipulation software.
- The history of photography will be covered.
Course Objectives
- Learning basic photographic techniques using a digital camera
- Producing aesthetically pleasing images using electronic image manipulation
- Creating well-composed images related to personal expression
- Exposure to contemporary & historical photographs
Backups
The students are required to back thier work up often. The Library has CD burners. You can use multiple Zip Disks, multiple cd's, anything. One copy and even two is not sufficient. The work must be available for critiques and grading. If your Zip disk fails with all your work on it you are still responsible for deadlines.
The professor will supply a schedule for demonstrations, lectures, critiques, and class trips. There will be three History of Photography quizzes, a Final Portfolio, a Final Project and other possible quizzes (one on the syllabus early in the semester!) The class lectures and labs will meet in CCH231 computer graphics lab unless other arrangements are discussed during class. Students are expected to work directly with the professor during class times.
Materials List
Students are asked to provide their own or shared digital cameras and accessories. This will be discussed on the first day of class. Students are required to keep backups. Cameras should be 3.2 megapixels or better and should be a major name brand for example Pentax, Olympus, Sony etc. An optical zoom is helpful but a digital zoom is not any help. Storage media is also needed. A camera bag will help protect your investment. They can be had for less than five dollars ar Wallmart.
Shop careful and price the camera including batteries, charger, and storage media. Most cameras have macro mode, some have the ability to make manual settings. Look at different flash modes. It may help to look at photo magazine reviews.
In addition, students will provide:
- 256mb Flash drives, or 100 MB Zip disks (don’t get 250 MB disks!)
- Epson Heavyweight Matte Coated Photo Quality Printer Paper, 8 1/2" x 11"
- Loose leaf notebook w/transparent sleeves for class information and print protection
- Binder for the final project

Course Requirements and Grading
- CRITIQUES - Satisfactory completion of assignments on time for critique. A Critique is the equivalent of an exam. There is a list of critique dates attached. Sometimes these dates have to be modified because of weather, equipment problems or conflicts with other activities. If you know in advance that you will miss a critique, you may receive partial credit if you hand in your work early. IT IS YOUR RESPONSIBILITY TO KEEP UPDATED ON CHANGES TO THE SCHEDULE BY CONTACTING THE PROFESSOR OR OTHER STUDENTS.
- ATTENDANCE & CLASS PARTICIPATION - Students are expected to punctually attend EVERY class and share knowledge, ideas, and reactions with other students and professor. THREE unexcused absences (two and a half in the summer) will result in one grade drop for the semester. THREE late arrivals to class will count as one unexcused absence. Students who intend to drop this class are advised to do so as soon as possible to enable others to enroll for the class. I do not have the ability to drop a student from the rolls, only to grade according to my attendance policies.
